Japan Philharmonic Orchestra

Pietari Inkinen is Chief Conductor of the Japan Philharmonic, a role he assumed from the start of 2016/17 season, following his tenure as Principal Guest since 2009. Highlights of 2016/2017 include a Wagner gala to open the season, as well as programmes including works by Bartok, Debussy and Sibelius.

The Japan Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1956 as the official orchestra of the Nippon Cultural Broadcasting company. It has been managed independently since 1972 and became a foundation in 1985. In addition to its Tokyo concerts and touring, the orchestra members engage in an active musical education programme, visiting schools and giving open concerts to inspire young people to learn about and engage with classical music.
